Dear Jason,
I don’t know why you plucked my resume out of hundreds you
look at on HCareers website, but I am sure glad you did. As you know,
I’ve been spoiled and have never had to interview before, and
after eight years, had the Jilly’s Group not been sold I would
have been happy to stay there for the duration of my career. Unfortunately
for me, that was not to be the case. So here I am, almost 50 years
old, an out of work. Multi-unit manager, tons of experience FOH and
BOH, designed and built nine stores, have only had two jobs in twelve
of the twenty years. I’ve been in the business, and can’t
find a job. Why? I guess because the people who hired me then were
club based with restaurants as their secondary income. Restaurants/
clubs weren’t what I set out to do but as long as my employers
demands were reasonable, and I’m compensated well I didn’t
look to jump ship. I have a sense of loyalty.
I know when I hired managers, I looked at their ability to manage,
learn, lead, as well as their ability to be flexible, fair and calm
in a fluid environment. All hospitality jobs, contain many of the
same components and drama, regardless of the check average or venue.
However, it appeared the people I was submitting my resume to didn’t
share my opinions. I’m not worried yet because as word gets
out that I’m looking, I’m approached by people who are
willing to give me a stake in a new concept for doing what I had been
doing for the Jilly’s group, designating, building, setting
up FOH and BOH controls, managing, ect. After several months of meetings
and scouting locations we find the right spot, are deals are made,
and after another several months of negotiations the final lease is
unacceptable. At one point an independent group hires me to turn around
a failing club downtown, but after a month of waiting for “you’ll
start next week” as the players there jockey control, I gave
up on them. Now I have this huge time gap on my resume to deal with.
Not a good place to be in.
As all my opinions fade away, I’m submitting, sending, faxing,
calling, and reaching out to anyone and everyone. I got some call-backs
from a few services, but there was no real follow-through on their
part and in the end I was just getting voice mail. Then out of the
blue you call me. What a breath of fresh air. You actually insisted
we meet face to face. We talked. Our first meeting was nearly two
hours long. You worked and reworked my resume at least 6 times, and
in the end you made me look like a star without embellishing. By the
time you were done with my resume even I was impressed with myself.
You walked me through the interview process, gave me tips, and kept
me propped up as I polished my interviewing skills. The lines of communication
were always kept open. You never failed to call me back even if I
just checking in. The pre-interview and post-interview calls were
a lot of help to. I’m glad if you were able to use my feed-back
to assess the HR people for your future reference.
Your manner and professionalism is of the highest caliber. Yet I think
the most important thing is that I understand you earn your living
by finding people jobs, its what you do, and your very good at it,
but never once did I get the impression I was just a paycheck to you.
It was always more like “Trust me, this is what I do. Follow
my lead, let me help you.” It’s rare to find someone with
your level of integrity, empathy, and sincerity.
Thank you,
Al Rohrssen
